A Call to True Life: Daily Bread

Posted by David Doppenberg on

Richard Foster in his book, Celebration of Discipline, begins with these words: “Superficiality is the curse of our age. The doctrine of instant satisfaction is a primary spiritual problem. The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.”

It is intentional that Dwelling with GOD is the top circle of my Faith Compass. As physically needful as daily manna was for the people of Israel, as daily sustenance is for us so too is a time of daily dwelling with God. A time to mature/grow/deepen our faith.

Joan Chittister in her book, Wisdom Distilled from the Daily, speaks of it in this way: “The function of prayer is to change my own mind, to put on the mind of Christ, to enable grace to break into me … (Dwelling with GOD) prayer is a time to see our world through the eyes of God … Prayer leads us and leavens us and enlightens us. And changes us.”

And God intends that the practice of dwelling daily is for you and me, for ordinary people who have jobs and families and busy schedules. A simple way to begin is to use the spiritual daily bread of a devotional book each morning—a practice to align our day to God’s Call to True Life.
